چکیده

This paper proposes a general definition of self-stabilizing wait-free shared memory objects. The definition ensures that, even in the face of processor failures, every execution after a transient memory failure is linearizable except for an a priori bounded number of actions. Shared registers have been used extensively as communication medium in self-stabilizing protocols. As an application of our theory, we therefore focus on self-stabilizing implementation of such registers, thus providing a large body of previous research with a more solid foundation. In particular, we prove that one cannot construct a self-stabilizing single-reader single-writer regular bit from self-stabilizing single-reader single-writer safe bits, using only a single bit for the writer. This leads us to postulate a self-stabilizing dual-reader single-writer safe bit as the minimal hardware needed to achieve self-stabilizing wait-free interprocess communication and synchronization. Based on this hardware, adaptations of well-known wait-free implementations of regular and atomic shared registers are proven to be self-stabilizing. # 2002 Elsevier Science (USA)

Transformations of Self-Stabilizing Algorithms

In this paper, we are interested in transformations of self-stabilizing algorithms from one model to another that preserve stabilization. We propose an easy technique for proving correctness of a natural class of transformations of self-stabilizing algorithms from any model to any other. We present a new transformation of self-stabilizing algorithms from a message passing model to a shared memo...

Wait-Free Stabilizing Dining Using Regular Registers

Dining philosophers is a scheduling paradigm that determines when processes in a distributed system should execute certain sections of their code so that processes do not execute ‘conflicting’ code sections concurrently, for some application-dependent notion of a ‘conflict’. Designing a stabilizing dining algorithm for shared-memory systems subject to process crashes presents an interesting cha...

Randomized Wait Free Concurrent Objects

A concurrent object is a data structure shared by concurrent processes A wait free implementation of a concurrent object guarantees that every operation completes in a nite number of steps regardless of how processes interleave It is known however that if concurrent processes communicate only by applying read and write operations to a shared memory then it is impossible to con struct wait free ...

N-Consensus is the Second Strongest Object for N+1 Processes

Objects like queue, swap, and test-and-set allow two processes to reach consensus, and are consequently “universal” for a system of two processes. But are there deterministic objects that do not solve 2-process consensus, and nevertheless allow two processes to solve a task that is not otherwise wait-free solvable in read-write shared memory? The answer “no” is a simple corollary of the main re...
